This really depends on the Democratic leadership.

If they can get their act together and speak with a coherent voice then I think they have a good shot. The problem with the party in general is that there tend to be mavericks in the ranks.

For example, the latest buzz about trying to re-introduce the draft. The Democrats in general have made it clear in the past that they do not want the draft. But this one guy wanted to be clever and try to leverage the draft to prevent the US from blindly engaging in another trumped up war.

While the idea does have some merits, it was clearly against what the Democratic platform is supporting.

It's these kind of freelance ideas that, while some may be good, serve to fracture the Democratic constituency.

If th Democrats hope to defeat the GOP Borg type monoculture, they will have to get their group to speak with one voice. Whoever wins the Democratic primary in '08 will need the full unified support of the Democratic party in order to win.

On top of this, the Democrats will need to prove themselves over the next two years that they can stick to their guns AND compromise effectively when they need to. Even if Bush vetoes everything that cosses his desk, the Democrats need to be able to go into '08 being able to say that they at least tried.

Keep in mind that the Democrats didn't win congress as much as the Republicans lost congress. Scandals, corruption, and the war played big parts in the Democratic win. Now is the time that they need to capitalize on this win such that when the next round of voting happens, they can win on their own merits.

all of that's counted on what the Dem's do. between the huge causes the Republicans lost became because they'd little sensible stuff to run on. truly the purely sensible element Republicans might want to say became the monetary gadget is growing to be at a healthful price. That purely did not resonate with the yankee public. If democrats follow won't be able to lose topics like elevating the minimum salary and bringing the troops abode they may be in reliable structure for 08. although, if the Dem's attempt to shove unlawful alien amnesty and impeachment hearings down our throat, Republicans could have plenty to run on in 08.

I think Democrats will be in power for a long time to come. The Republicans have done so much damage it will take years to see it reversed. The new congress could do nothing and I still believe we will elect a Democratic president in '08.

2 years is plenty of time to execute a strategy/plan or at least set it in motion to see improvements economy/war etc. But, if it doesn't have a valid plan, then 2008 will be up in the air and voters will be faced with a difficult decision.

Unfortunately, voters are too emotional to look at politics from an objective perspective!

They already have!
I find it funny the amount of nit-wits, that cry about amnesty that the democrats want to give when their oposition just wants to send all the illegals back, and let more "guest workers" in, in their place.
people really are naive enough to think their wages are going to go up by getting rid of illegals, and crime is going to go down and the sun is going to shine brighter, and the silver lined clouds are going to go away, and their car is never going to break down again.........

what people fail to realize, is who created the "guest worker" program in 2004 in the first place, and what majority in congress passed it!
they fail to realize what majority in congress and what president just improved business relations with a communist country, and just costed Americans jobs to the people who killed so many Americans in the Vietnam war!

they also fail to realize that republicans want to cut the farm subsidies, which are what keeps our food supply costing us less! its what keeps corporate farms from making family owned farms a exctinct specie.
once corporations dominate the farm industry, they'll have control of our future energy source, our clothing, and our food.
everyone will be at the mercy of cartel-like conglomerates like big oil companies.
you think gas prices are bad, wait till they have a monoply on your food clothes and fuel, which is exactly what modern republicans are trying to achieve!

I think America sent a clear message to GWB this election, that he did not understand, because he keeps representing America in a light that makes things worse for us, and better for everyone else, so i think voters will feel the need to re-emphasize that statment in 2008!

Depends on what they do about immigration ,, over 75% of the American want our borders closed and if they do it right then they have a good chance ,
Iraq was a big reason they got in , so they will have to come up with a good plan for ending that fiasco .

If the Democratic party give the 12+ million illegal aliens amnesty, I don't think they have a chance to win in 2008 elections. That I know for a fact. If they give amnesty to all these illegals they will have to raise taxes in order to keep them here. You will see!!!

My guess is that they will do enough to deprive their nominee of a victory.
