They are extremely overcrowded! And when I say extremely I mean extremely.... do you think my highschool would let me post posters/flyers around the school?

I mean I attend an extremely large highschool like 3,000 kids.... somebody's gotta want a cat?

Yes, post the flyer's. You may also wish to contact certain dog breed rescues groups, for the dogs at the shelter, informing them of so and so, and how crowed it has become at the shelter. There are also cat rescues out there that might be interested.
Never assume that the shelter does this, as most of them do not. I am sure that they would appreciate the help.

First, call the shelter and ask what they can do. Some shelters like the Humane Society have foster programs where you can give the animal shelter in your home for a time until it is adopted.

Next, ask your school BEFORE you put up posters or anything, and make sure you have the shelter's blessing to do so. You could also put up signs on bulletin boards around town. The shelter might be interested in putting ads in the newspaper featuring pets they want to adopt out. Or you could find out if the shelter has a "seniors for seniors" program where they give out older cats to seniors for companions.

Do NOT encourage people to get pets as gifts for Christmas though. A pet should never be given as a gift, because interest wanes quickly and the pet can become neglected. (this happens especially with rabbits and chicks at Easter and puppies at Christmas). A pet should only go to families who want to keep the pet for the rest of its life.

If you have the time, volunteer at the shelter. There are so many animals who are stressed at being in that environment and need a friendly touch.

We have the same problem at an animal shetler near where I live - although I can't assist with cat adoption, I can donate a couple of food tins when I'm in the neighbourhood - it certainly helps cut down the cost of feeding all those homeless animals.

Perhaps the kids can sponsor a public awareness campaign to encourage people to spay and neuter their pets. You could plan event for a major adoption drive and send press releases to all the radio and tv stations and newspapers within 100 miles, inviting people to come to adopt a pet. Organize carpools of kids to go to the shelter to volunteer. What a lovely thing you have in your concern for our dearest and best friends. Thank you for caring.

See if whoever is in charge of student activities will let you put up posters. Pictures of cute animals who need homes will probably convince a few people.

You'd have to print a lot of flyers...some people tend to vandalize flyers. Anyway, the flyers sound like a good idea.

Ask your local vets for sponsorhips or donations. You may have to go to city hall if you want people to donate money or items for your cause.I also think that you will have to prove your purchases, but anything helps.
