I'm working on my masters in counseling right now. Basically, we learn listening skills, empathizing skills (skills to let the client know we understand what they are going through by what we say and how we respond) and ways to build a good relationship with your clients. The relationship you form with them is the thing that is going to be most helpful to them. Also, we learn how to ask the right questions, to get our clients to gain insight into their problems and help them understand where they are coming from and explore the problems as deeply as possible.

You need at least a masters degree to get licensed to practice in all states, so keep that in mind through your schooling!

A good psychologist, psychiatrist, or therapist/counselor needs to be able to analyze what they are hearing, and, they need to be effective in their questioning. If you have ever sat through an hour of random talk and an hour of focused counseling you will know the difference. This is both an art and a skill. I encourage you to pursue it. It is one of the healing professions.

2 great qualities. Being a good listener. Being a good encourager of people - Look for that little ray of light in the client's life and turn it into sunshine. A few more, always be on your client's side. Most of the time, you are the only person in their corner, even against themselves. Help people come to their own solutions so they can feel empowered and avoid giving advice unless they ask you for it. Take care of yourself, a raggedy therapist is not helpin' anybody! Good luck in your career choices.
