He was supposedly one of the conspirators involved in the Gunpowder Plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament, although some historians maintain that he was actually working as a spy for the government. He was caught when the cellars were searched and the gunpowder found. Fawkes was tortured until he confessed (surprise!). Some of the ringleaders were killed whilst being pursued, and others were executed or put in the Tower. Because Fawkes was a commoner, he was hung, drawn and quartered. The whole event became a focus for anti-Catholic feeling and instead of Bonfire Night being held on the birthday of Queen Elizabeth 1 as it had been, it moved to Nov 5th, and has been celebrated that day ever since. Fawkes' effigy was burned, (a traditional English way of expressing extreme disapproval of enemies) hence the 'guy'.
Bootham School, York, don't burn a guy because he was a former pupil of the school.

Guy Fawkes had attempted to blow up the English Houses Of Parliament. The attempt to do this failed, but it is still traditionally remembered every year, when England and some other countries celebrate Bonfire Night. A nursery rhyme goes ..... is there any reason why gun-powder , ...... be forgot?

He tried to blow up the houses of Parliament, failed miserably, and that as the saying goes is history. That's how we got to have bonfire night each year on November 5Th. He did his best to change things in 1605, and his name was actually Guido Fawkes. His accomplices were Robert Catesby, Thomas Winter, Thomas Percy, John Wright and they were later joined by Robert Keyes.
