some people have told me that you have to have the fender completly off, and others say all you have to have off is the hood hinges to get the fender emblems off. then others have said you can ease them off from the outside, but I know there delicate and break easy so, does anybody know how to get them off without breaking?

3\8" socket. or ratchet wrench

They are self threading button nuts.

And, they break easily, and hard to replace. (if broken)

all depends on the condition of the emblem and the fender.

most of that age are die cast and can be broken easily.

I have removed emblems from that age of truck with 2 small screwdrivers prying a little at a time and trying to keep the emblem square to the car so the pins dont break off.

some of the really big style emblems had a threaded shaft and a nut or press fit clip on the back so if you can get to the inside of the fender and you are keeping these for a restoration it might be worth the time to take the fender loose.

it depends on the emblems and what the truck has been though and if you want to save the paint on the panel, the easiest way is to take some decal/gasket remover and let it soak under the emblem, this will also take the paint off too, so watch out!. then you can use a sharp putty knife and slowly start to scape it off from one end.

you could try using a heat gun and a sticker scraper just heat up the emblem then with a sticker scraper or razor blade get close to the emblem right under it and go slow and get the glue out from under it .
