I keep about $5, max $30.
I use my debit/credit card for purchases.
I keep a lot of change and a few bills in the car for parking, since I live in the city.
As far as recommending how much you should keep on you, I have no clue since I don't know anything about you.

I normally only carry $20-30 dollars on me,i rather use debit or credit cards.

fifty bucks at all times but dont flash it around.100 would be better for emergencys .what kind of emergencys ? say you get locked out of your car in a bad area at midnight and have to give someone incentive to rescue you.face it if you say oh help me and Ill stop at my atm its kind of bogus .They dont know your not just talking trash so show the money in an emergency.

a twenty or less. you should keep for up to that much at all times because it is more safe.
