He was just copying what he saw others doing with no clue as to what was going on. He never was very bright as a child or as a drug sodden adult.
I remember that whole sequence of events very vividly. I was in shock that the President of the United States had been murdered. Many people were shocked, driving home I turned my lights on and so did everybody else, like one gigantic funeral procession. I was not particularly fond of Kennedy, he was not a very good president, which would have become obvious in time. But the office of President had been violated.
What was really disturbing was when they arrested Lee Oswald I made the comment "He'll never live long enough to stand trial. then when Jack Ruby was convicted I said "He'll be dead in short order from heart failure, pneumonia or an STD. Those were the excuses given at that time for politically convenient deaths, I was surprised when it was announced that he had died of heart failure and pneumonia resulting from a serious case of syphilis.

I am so glad that someone remembered Thank You! JFK was our hero, I was in my eighth grade classroom when they made the announcement, we were in shock, all the girls were crying. People don't understand, he had made us so proud of our country, we thought that anything was possible, we would make the world a better place for all people. The day the music died, we all lost our innocence and we can't get it back.

That picture is a great icon of the Kennedy era.
Kennedy had a very tough job, during a very decisive time in our history. He always said the best things that made him happy, was his kids.

No. Sounds cute. Wouldn't rank as history's most famous salute, however.

Cute, but a media stunt. He was obviously prompted by his mother. That lessens the gesture in my mind.
