Are you speaking of recorded music or live music?
Go to www.grandband.com or some other professional site to get some ideas of what is needed at a formal dance. I have worked this sort of gig with several different dance bands. You need a variety of music for a formal dance, not just rock or hip hop!

Id say go with some Smashing Pumpkins especially Tonight Tonight. In My Time of Need by Opeth is also quite nice, kinda on the sadder side, but still nice. Those are just a few examples, hope they help.

Just regular dance music because If you dont play what everone likes they may not dance ya know? You wanna play something every one likes and can dance to. Ask the other people that will be there
