R signifies a radial tire.I think 225/40 would fit ok.

They're approximately 225 mm wide, which works out to be close to nine inches. They should fit, as they're not that much wider than the rim itself. I'm running 225/50R16 tires on 16 x 7" rims myself.

yes that tire would fit. aspect ratio 40% of the 225 mm. is side wall on 2 sides, = 45 mm on each side, 135 mm of tire width. R = radial tire wich is pretty much standard on autos, if it had no R it would be classed bias ply which is obsolete in the auto industry.
here is an example link that will help with tire-rim matching. http://fitments.toyo.com/guide/search.php?model_year=2002&make_id=9&model=M+Roadster+%26+Coupe&vehicle_id=16865

that tire is 8.8 inches wide, being such a low aspect ratio there is not much space to makeup the difference go with an 18x8, or an 18x8.5 to be safe
