They naysayers really make me mad. Why don't YOU go ahead and carry a baby for 9 months. Go ahead and see how horrible you feel physically.. throwing up, food cravings and aversions, peeing all the time, barely being able to walk or move or work, and paying tons of money for maternity clothing and LOSING money because you can't work due to being pregnant and having a baby, not to mention the health care costs!
Then after going through all that, give it away to someone else... Get serious!
Most abortions are needed because the women are POOR do you understand that children cost a LOT of money regardless if we keep them or give them away! Other reasons are rape, incest, mother's health issues, drug use or abuse from a partner as well.

Hmm..well lets see how about the womans health? If a woman has an ectopic pregnancy (where the embryo is growing outside of the uterus) the baby will die for sure-there is no way to trasnplant the baby and there is no chance for survival AND the mother's life is at risk. If the mother doesn't have an abortion, she will likely bleed to death and risk her future fertility. Ectopic pregnancy is the LEADING cause of pregnancy related deaths.
There are several health factors that could cause the mother to die if she goes to term. If she has cancer and has to have chemotherapy or radiation, if she has kidney or heart diseases-that is these organs could not function if they were needed to support another living being.
Another reason to have an abortion would be that the baby will die at birth due to birth defects, i.e being born without a brain, digestive system, skin, half of a body etc.
Other reasons include genetic disorders such as cystic fibrosis. These people live to be in their twenties at the most and suffer painfully and horribly all of their lives. Sickle cell anemia is another condition in which children suffer and die young.
Another reason would be down-syndrome or other chromosomal diseases. Many people do not feel that they can care for a severely mentally handicapped child.
I do not think that using abortion for birth control is a valid reason but there are many other good reasons to have one. If I hadn't terminated two pregnancies (even though they were wanted), I would not be here today as I would have bled to death.
P.S. Most people who have early abortions such as what I received, were done using an injection of methotrexate at week five of pregnancy. The injection is a chemotherapy type drug that blocks folic acid from reaching the zygote or embryo which prevents cell production. Zygotes and embryos at this stage do not have a nervous system yet so they cannot feel pain. They do not have a soul, do not have a brain and cannot process rational thought-therefor they are more of an organism than a baby.

Im not for abortion, but I will try my best to help you with your debate. The argument that you have the right to do what ever you want with your body is very weak and can be shot down. Here is an argument that contradicts your answer.
"first, it is nonsense to suggest that the law never tells people what they can or cannot do with their bodies. In fact, there are many things which people are not legally allowed to do with their bodies. To name just a few, they cannot sell them for sex, or sell their organs to people who need transplants, or put certain drugs into their bodies." If the goverment allows us to do what ever we want with are body, why not make drugs legal, prositution all legal, after all its our body we should be able to do what we want with it. You have circumstances like rape that you can use. Sometime abortion also is needed to safe the mothers life, you can you that two. The really problem you going to have is the 94% of abortions that take place becouse its convient for the mother. Thats what someone from the life will throw at you. I am usually good at debates as I have alot of evidence for my answer, but the problem with the abortion debate, all the arguments are not supported by any scientific evidence. The pro life is back up by evidence to support their answers and the pro-choice are back up by opinions and the mothers right to chose, thats why these arguments often fall apart. I remember when I was philosophy. I remember when I was in a high school many years ago. I created an argument so good that I crushed my oppenment in the debate. If you can prove that the baby is not a human baby and have evidence to back up, then you can crack the abortion argument open. I have never seen this though. good luck on your debate.

That might be one reason for abortion, but is hardly the only one. You are looking at abortion entirely from the perspective of the fetus (or read child if you prefer.) That is, you are looking at what is in the best interest of the fetus. But only in very rare circumstances is abortion justified on the grounds that it is in the fetus' best interests. You are right that making the case that it is in someone's best interest to never have a life is a very difficult case to make. Not impossible, however - a baby who will be born with such severe defects that they will not live more than a few painful months is a rare case, but still one in which abortion would be justified on being in the best interest of the child. I do not think that 2 follows from 1. It is a mistake to equate a fetus/baby with an adult. You say that we should then counsel adults with the same disabilities to kill themselves. But this entirely ignores the fact that these adults are going to be deciding what is in their interest anyway. If anything your argument is an argument for legalizing euthanasia, not making abortion illegal. We do not need to tell adults to kill themselves, because they are the ones that can judge whether or not their life is worth living and act accordingly. A fetus/baby possesses no such ability. Whereas we do not need to counsel or decide for the adult (just maybe make euthanasia legal so they can freely make their decision) we do need to decide for the baby/ fetus. So we don't cousel adults, because we recognize that they are going to be able to end their lives if they find them too miserable. Since the fetus/baby does not have this option, we do make the decision for them, and in at least some cases it does seem best to kill them rather than make them live for a short but painful period of time before dying anyway. Also, you need to remember that there is another person involved here - the mother. We give people a right to bodily privacy even when others will die as a result. For example, we do not force people to be organ donors, even though lives hang in the balance. The right of a person who is dead to bodily privacy trumps the right of the person needing the organ to life. If we extend this much consideration to dead people, why is it so controversial that a woman gets just as much consideration? We cannot be forced to donate blood against our will to save lives, so why should women be forced to go through the much more serious process of pregnancy and birth to save lives? All of this is assuming that the fetus is a human with a full right to life. This assumption has a lot of flaws with it, but I won't go in to them here.

You know, the abortion topic is so complex, you will never agree with anyone who thinks differently about it. I used tot hink that it is a woman's choice but when you dig deep into the topic you find out that women have used abortion as a contraceptive and that is not right or fare for the baby. However I still fell like it you have been raped, you should have the choice to keep the baby or to have an abortion, I know I would not like to have a baby whose dad is a psycho! and a baby I did not planned or I did not ask for.

this is coming from someone who has had an abortion. one- dont let anyone influence the decision to have an abortion, it has to be ALL of what you want to do, its your body and baby. two- there are no good reasons to have an abortion. if you know that it is something you truly want to do, then do it, but if you have any doubts , don't. i had mine 3 years ago and i regret the reasons why i did it. its a hard thing to do, very hard, but remember its up to you and no one else.

Well it isnt lame for someone to have an abortion because they were raped because i know i would not want to carry a baby of rape inside of me for 9 months.
If a mother's life/health were in danger and say it would kill her to have a baby then abortion i think is called for.
I would abort than for myself to die and leave my son behide.
If something was terribly wrong with the fetus (disease/etc.) and would just live a horrible life and death then i think abortion is called for.
If a girl is just way too young or someone that gets pregnant and cannot take care of a baby then i think abortion is called for.
Women have the right to choose whether they want to have an abortion or not and they don't even got to have a good reason to have it.
That is the way it is.

where I work....all the children at my center are abused and neglected children they had suffered so much. The stories of these children's lives are extreme and terrible. Such as kids being locked in a leaky storage shed since the day they were born. Never seen daylight...found by chance during a drug raid. The children were so small and couldn't speak because they were never spoken to. They lived surrounded by their own feces and cockroaches. I oppose abortion as casual birth control. But I have seen the worst in people....people who are on drugs, people who rape...people who don't give a f*** about their kids..parents who abuse their kids...parents who let their boyfriends molest their kids. Foster parents abusing foster children and only keeping them to get money. I'm not saying abortion is the answer...but I would rather see people make a decision that is right for them. I take birth control..I take precautions to not get pregnant..I don't whore myself around..but if I were to get pregnant..I would get an abortion because I am not ready. If I wanted to start a family I want to love my future kids enough to know that I am ready to be a good mom. I wish some of these people would have abortions rathe than throwing their kids away in dumpsters or locking them up in storage sheds.

I find no reason for someone to have an abortion.
"A person's a person no matter how small."
A baby is not a part of a womens body, they are a living being that have their own organs and were created to be their own person even before they are born.
If a baby is part of a womens body and she can do with it what she pleases before it is born then why can't she just kill us now that we are born?.
I see no reason to have an abortion. It's killing a human life.
Here's a random quote that I thought was interesting.
"It's funny how all the Pro-Choice people are already born."

other reasons could be... When you have your first ultrasound and they find out that the baby has down syndrom or a physical retardation, they will tell you and give you the option to have an abortion... if there is a complication with the baby you do have the right to have an abortion. you can type in abortion debates on yahoo... there are some good pros and cons there... good luck hun...
