When the USSR was up and running the World was heldi n a sort of status quo where wars many wars were fought and funded by either side . Since the fall of Russia and it's other communist states has the US been left with the UK as the sole policemen of the World, leaving themselves open to terrorist attack from countries that previously we would have held at arms length and used more clandestine means of influence?

I agree Bgood_26 but the USSR never invaded North Vietnam yet they funded them clandestinely with weapons just as the US supplied and supported the Taliban when the USSR invaded Afghanistan. They were kept as 'localised' wars.

I think the change in balance of power is a problem and the rest of the world either hates the U. S. or they fear us and neither is really good for the world and while I am an American, I do realize that we all occupy the planet and we all need to get along, not out of fear but out of respect.

Many of the countries under Soviet influence have become free, but others have become terrorist. Look at former-Yugoslavia, Afghanistan, and Syria.

With 2 big guys on the block 2 gangs were created. Each kept his side in line. Now there is too much for 1 big guy to handle. Every body is an under dog when they come up against him. Now he his just looked as a bully. It is like everyone wishes to smash his clay feet.

It sucks that the USSR crumbled, the USSR made international hockey and chess famous. I wish the USSR still existed, you got some great international rivalries.

When USSR crumbled, the US became uncontrollable with discretion to invade countries. At least, when USSR existed, there was a check and balance.

I don't think it's ever really been 'safe' but since the fall of it it's curious how similar we are to a regime we routinely criticised for their soullessness, repressiveness, and absolute lack of freedom.

We no longer have hundreds of nukes aimed at us, but we face more threats that would be less catastrophic.
