The difference between modern Republicans and Democrats is the differences between their marginal constituencies: the Republicans have Very Wealthy Individuals (also called Big Business) and Very Conservative Christians; Democrats have Rich Workers (also called Organized Labor) and people who feel abused by the government.

The Republicans have made a name for themselves by telling Americans that the government should support their views, even if means oppressing minorities and starting wars, and has become the party of Big Bankrupt Government: lower taxes, increase expenditures, write laws that ignore states' rights.

The Democrats have done the same by telling Americans that the Federal Government is fundamentally flawed if it limits the rights of the individual in any way. This encourages disenfranchisement of the minorities, whom the Democrats then work to convince that their vote matters, and that they should vote Democratic. This is followed by an increase in socialistic laws: that capitalism isn't a panacea for all the world's ills, so the state should take care of the things beyond the control of the individual. This makes the Democrats the party of Even Bigger Bankrupt Government: raise taxes, increase expenditures (greater than the tax increase,) and write laws that ignore states rights.

Democrats of the modern era, last 30 years, raise taxes, increase government, and cut defense spending.

Republicans of 1994 cut taxes, stopped the growth of government, and increased defense spending. At some point along the way, they forgot what they were elected to do and the conservatives voted them out.

You can sit and list platform differences all day, but it all boils down to the one saying, "if you give a man a fish, he'll eat for a day...if you teach a man to fish, he'll eat for a lifetime." Democrats want government to hand out 'fish' to the citizenry - they want government to be in control of your life. Republicans favor teaching citizens to 'fish' so that they can gain the tools they need to provide for themselves and their families without continuous government intervention and power. This difference takes many forms, as one can tell in the various social/economic issues of the day.
