They are not. It's an urban legend. Besides, Elephants aren't afraid of humans, lions, or anything. Even lion prides move out of the way when the big animals comes.

Snopes comments that "In fact, given the large size and relatively poor eyesight of elephants, they don't necessarily notice the occasional mouse scurrying around them all that often."

Despite what it looks like, this is a myth. Elephants are not afraid of mice. What you don't know is that with their large ears, elephants can hear subsonic sounds. It's entirelly possible that subsonic sounds can be used to control elephant movements. This was done in the past at circuses. This way when a mouse is introduced, and sound is played at the same time, then the elephant will move and appear to be frightened of the mouse.

I HAVE seen with my own two eyes hoofed animals such as horses and cows spook at a sudden half seen scurry from a mouse under their feet even though they are not normally afraid of mice. heck the same thing has happen to me even though Im not one to be afraid of mice normally. I suspect that, given the snoops elephants poor eyesight point, the same thing could happen to an elephant. this COULD be the origin of the myth.(speculation only)
