Games for bored children in cars on long trips? What games do they enjoy most?

We played an alphabet game. It was a competition. The idea was to find a sign or license plate with a word beginning with the next letter of the alphabet. Whoever found a sign first, used that and no one else could use that sign. Whoever reached the end of the alphabet first, won. (Sometimes we had to skip hard letters like X.)
