This is embarrasing, but what rules exist for wearing black tops? Do I have to wear gray pants/black belt and shoes, or can I use khakis with a brown belt and shoes?

I wouldn't wear gray with black it over does the whole look and it's too dark. Also, brown and black don't go so when wearing black stay away from brown as much as you can. I think the khakis would look good though. Good luck!

Go with the gray with black shoes and belt
Brown belt and shoes doesn't really go to well or maybe the khakis with the black belt and shoes should look good too

Khakis would be fine with a black top, but I would stay away from the brown shoes and belt. Go with black shoes and belt.

Black goes with everything even other neutrals (brown, grey, navy, tan, or pinstripes). Anything is possible with black. Most people think that you are limited only to one neutral per outfit, but in truth they can be coordinated.

No rules. You control that. You don't have to wear that, but I like to wear white pants with black tops...not the same but matchable!
