It's not only Muslims who practice female circumcision and not all of them do. Female circumcision is used to control women. If they can not enjoy sex, then they won't cheat on their husbands. Sometimes, the clitoris is removed, thus removing any pleasure from sex. In Africa it is practiced among tribes where girl's vaginas are sewn shut leaving a small hole for menstral blood. At the time of her marriage, her husband rips her open. He then displays the bloody cloth (placed underneath her before sex) outside of his house proving his wife was a virgin. It's merely another way for men to control women. I took a class in college for my Archaeology degree where we actually had to watch a female circumcision in Africa, not a pretty sight considering that no pain medication was administered...pretty sad.

It is a way to control women. Many cultures have set a variety of practices in place for this reason. Basically, until DNA testing was available there was no way to confirm that a man fathered the child of his wife. In order to prevent women from straying female circumcision is performed before a girl reaches puberty. This mutilation removes the physical pleasure of sex for the woman. It is thought that when the act is done for reproduction only and not pleasure the woman will not have affairs. Also along with circumcision it is common to lace up the opening of the vagina. The suture is cut only for reproduction purposes and is re-sewn after delivery of a baby. It's amazing what men will do to protect money, land, and bloodlines.

Out of ignorance. Thinking that it will keep the girls from engaging in premarital sex.

It's called khitan for males and khifad for females. Only the religious one is the one for males. It was proven healthy.

I'm a Muslim and we don't believe in females' circumcision as a religious thing.

There are still ignorant poor people who don't know that circumcision doesn't affect the need for sex, it only affects the pleasure during sex.

There are 3 kinds of circumcision that I know of:
One performed by removing only the tip, another is by removing much from that part and the area around it too. and the third they even sew the vagina. In Sudan and some African countries the 3 kind is performed.

All of them cause derformity and a profound shock to the girl.
Some girls die from hemorrhage or infections coz it's not done by doctors but by any one the illitrate parents think can do it!
It also deeply affects the sexual life of the married woman. She loses much of the pleasure and that makes her husband feel that she is negative in their relationship.
The third kind also affects birth in many ways.

I'm not a doctor I just watched that on TV, I don't know the medical jargon. A Muslim scholar and a doctor and they are both against it, so it's not just my family and acquaintances. Saudi Arabia, known for being strict about religion, don't perform any kind of female circumcision at all.

Moronic religious and cultural reasons that are intended to keep women " pure " by denying them sexual gratification.
