Dear Dave, I wouldn't really give the widower money at this time. You can offer at a later date perhaps. But since he has a child, you can help by either taking over groceries or perhaps toys, or ask the widower what you can do for him. That is a awkward situation because you need to ask him if perhaps everything is taken care of. And handle it in a gentle way without being overwhelming as it is. This way if they tell you then you will know for certain if things are taken care of. You could also take the gentleman and his child out for a dinner even, to get away from things. I am sure whatever you come up with will be very helpful to this person in his time of need.

does the family have a church they go to ? If so then try to talk to their minister and see if he maybe can take the money and put it into a trust.good luck and god bless.
