what did the native americans refer or call themselves before the european explorers called them indians?

Depends on the tribe. "Sioux" means "enemy" and was used by the other tribes, while they refered to themselves as "Lakotah" or "The People". Usually Native Americans refered to themselves in some variation of "The People".

By their own Nation or tribe name... Many calling themselves the people, friends, and similar terms. (As a side note, Lakota means something more like friends or allies...'people' is oyate.)

each tribe referred to themselves differently but a great number of them called themselves (the people) in whatever language they spoke

I am not sure but im sure they didn't have names because they didn't need to identify themselves.
