E=mc2 is Einstein's famous theory of relativity. It basically states an equivalence between mass and the square of the speed of light (c^2). E stands for ENERGY, M for MASS and C for Speed of light.

Thus, in english, the maximum amount of energy obtainable from any matter is its mass multiplied by the speed of light squared.

E is energy (in Joules)

m is mass in kilograms

c is the speed of light in a vacuum in metres per second.

Oh, and you said you know what the 2 is, but I hope you realise that it is used to represent the squaring of c. That is, c squared, not times 2.

E is Energy of a mass structure . m is the value of the quantity of the mass structure C is the velocity of light and the 2 superscrit means squared.
The formula was developed by Henri poincare in which he used the definiton of energy as the product of mass and velocity squared and plugged the velocity of light as the limit of velocity.Later Einstein used the formula for his Theory of Relativity.
