having everyone buy their own christmas presents?

people are crazy during christmas. they overspend, get things they don't want, etc.

i will be buying my own presents; and i will tell my friends/family not to buy me anything, but to buy their own presents.

1. you will always like your gift

2. you will always be in control of your own spending

3. you will eliminate that weird feeling of giving a gift and expecting one in return. or receiving a gift and feeling obligated to give one.

what are your thoughts on my idea?

i've never experienced a crazy christmas. i don't overspend and neither does anyone i know. i always get what i want but then again i'm not hard to please. i get a great joy in buying gifts for others. if they wanna buy their own gifts thats cool but i'd still buy them a gift. i'd be just as happy without receiving gifts. anyone that complains about the gift they receive are just plain rude.

but yeah the whole everyone buying their own gift thing wouldn't work for everyone. what about the kids and less fortunate?
i think you lost the christmas spirit.

I understand your feelings about gift giving and receiving, and sadly that's because Christmas has become so commercialized and the focus on what gifts we get. I do not agree with buying your own, because that certainly takes away from the happiness and real meaning of Christmas. I suppose deciding what Christmas means to you is what is important. If it's all about the gifts, then buy your own...invite your friends and family over for dinner and showing off of what each of you picked out on your shopping spree. Seems to me that could be any shopping spree of the year...it is NOT Christmas. I prefer the idea of keeping gifts small and to our special persons in our life as a token of our friendship and love, having them over for a wonderful time to share without worrying about who got what.

hey, i have never thought about that. i think it is a wonderful idea. you wouldn't have to worry if your present will be liked, or disliked and returned the next day for something better. you also get what YOU want. however, some people enjoy the feeling of giving. others look forward to the excitement and surprise of receiveing..but still its a good idea

Technically, a present is something that you receive from another person, not yourself.
So, if you buy yourself stuff for Christmas instead of others, you're not really giving yourself your presents.
Also, when people give you presents, it shows that they care for you.
You know their going to buy you presents even if you tell them not to.
It also seems kinda rude, because it's almost as if you know the present their gonna get you will suck, so you refuse to have them give you anything at all.
Sounds like a pretty bad idea to me.
