New laptops include a wi-fi modem. Older laptops have card slots that you can easily buy a PCMCIA wi-fi card and install the card. You need to make sure that the card support the operating system of your laptop. You also need to understand that local area wifi means that you need to either have a wifi router connected to either a DSL modem or cable modem if you intend on using it at home. Some cities, many libraries, many cafe's, airports (cost money), hotels (sometimes costs money) and many other locations have installed local area wifi networks that will support wi-fi cards. Don't confuse it with the cellular network, as they require their own specialized cards and the providers, like Verizon, charge a lot for the card and their wifi services.
