Absolutely. First up, I don't know where the history of tag comes from. I checked Wikipedia and it didn't mention anything of its origins except that it dated back to ancient Egypt. Chase games are standard play for a lot of young animals as well. I know my puppy loves to run and chase down other dogs, not so much to make them "it" as to gain and keep their attention.
That said, I don't see what's wrong with the concept of tag. There are literally dozens of versions of tag, not all of which are entirely Social Darwinian every person for themselves, like blob tag or round-up. Also, while it is true that sometimes there is a stigma attached to being it if you are unable to tag someone else, don't kids usually pick on other kids who aren't as physically gifted in ALL sports and activities? Should we ban them all for that reason?
Most importantly, it's good for kids to learn social skills. Yes, we as responsible adults should guide them, but kids also need to learn how to interact with each other, formulate rules, enforce rules, and the like. Good parents and teachers and adults will inculcate fair play rules into their kids, and these kids will hopefully teach others the right way.

yes. I understand that I myself played tag when I was a kid...but we live in a very different society today. Children are becoming more violent and you never know if there is one child that will take the tagging to far and either push or hit another child.

I have never seen a game of tag that should have been forbidden. We have all kinds of tag games played: freeze tag, toilet tag (yes, you have to have your 'handle' 'flushed' by an unfrozen opponent to be able to continue the game!), regular tag, home base tag, tree tag... It's great exercise and a lot of fun if the focus isn't too competitive and kids aren't rough.
The roots of the game have nothing to do with it. By that reasoning, we should be wary of gyms because 'gymnasium' means to exercise in the nude! We also shouldn't play chess or checkers, no polo...

Yes. Many people don't know but tag has it origins as a violent game in which roman aristocrats on horseback would "tag" their slaves (running for their lives) with arrows, killing them. They did this because slaves were so abundant and often after a large project was completed there would be no use for them.
To this day "tag" remains a violent game in which children chase each other around, sometimes running into things or knocking each other down. We don't have gladiators anymore, so why tag is still around is beyond me.

I don't think children should be able to play tag, they could get hurt, in fact I don't think children should be able to play on the merry go round because they could get dizzy and hurt themselves. I don't think children should be allowed to eat because the food could lodge itself in the wrong tube and choke to death and come to think of it I don't think children should be allowed to breath because if they breath in some toxic fumes 40 years or so down the line they could develop lung cancer or a pulmonary embolism or even black lung disease. In fact I don't think children should be born because then that leads to life and ya know life has all these problems and that leads to all this ultra political correct garbage and a bunch of people worring about children playing tag on a playground WHEN OUR OLDER CHILDREN ARE IN IRAQ RISKING THEIR LIVES FOR THIS COUNTRY-GET REAL -GET A LIFE!!!

I played tag, dodge ball, ran into things, fell down, didn't wear a bicycle helmet...and amazingly I am still alive, well and quite happy. I am sure many many others are as well. If they don't want to play fine... if they do, then they should be allowed.
