I was a pest controller for a couple years and I did very well with cockroach problems. There is nothing like a cockroach. All insects have six legs, a lot have antennae, but that's about it. If it looks like a blattus germanicus, it is a german cockroach.

Um... many bugs resemble other bugs, so it's possible that you just have an insect that looks similar to a cockroach.

Palmetto bug, especially if it flies.
If it is the Jumbo sized cockroach (like an inch long and fat), it is usually called a waterbug.

Does it fly? If it does fly that is called a wood roach they ugly icky things and you should kill it right away.
