Same reason that asians generally have super straight hair or caucasions generally have thin hair. We are all different on the outside, but that's what makes us great.
I am African American and I am very proud of my hair. I wear it natural most of the time.
We should all be proud with whatever we were born with and stop trying to all look the same.

I am proud of my hair it's very kinky and nappy and I wear it in long braids or an Afro. I have never been ashamed of the texture of my hair i really don't want straight hair. The kinkiness in my hair makes it very versatile in styling. I can get styles that people with straight hair can get but they can't get done to their hair what i can get done to mine. But some people are ashamed of their African Americans are ashamed of their hair texture simply because it doesn't fit Americas standard of beauty.

I would imagine that those of African heritage have the texture hair that they do because it was advantageous for them to have such hair as opposed to straight hair that other groups have. I am not black, but it would appear to me that this sort of hair would have the advantage of drying faster and not holding moisture next to the scalp; it also appears to me that this sort of hair would hold less heat as it appears to stand away from the scalp somewhat. Both of these things would seem to be an advantage in the hot and rainy climate of many parts of Africa. I certainly wouldn't want to have to live in that climate with my own curly hair that holds tons of heat in the summer, and takes forever to dry!
As to pride - I've never gotten the impression that any of the black/African people I know are not proud of their hair or any other feature they posess.

I am proud of my hair. I have nappy-happy hair, and I love it. Genetics is what gives me my coarse lovely texture. Check out nappturality.com if you don't think there are blacks who love their own hair texture.

First of all not all blacks have nappy hair, our hair are in degrees from Nappy to curly to straight (naturally). My hair is naturally curly. And yes i would be proud to wear my hair whether if it was Nappy or not.

just as a white person has straight hair -its adaptation . in the hot sun of islands or Africa,in order to survive the heat has to escape from the head hence tight curls . in europe the cold and sun- less environment led to lighter skin and hair that can trap heat . i am actually proud of my hair b/c i know whats great about who i am, i dont follow the trend to permanently straighten my hair to look unethnic - i dont use negative terms like nappy either - this is the natural me!

My only guess is that it served some type of survival purpose in their particular climate many years ago. If I am to guess that a great deal of their ancestors lived in hot climates, and their skin protected them from the harsh sun. A similar analogy I would use is that people in colder climates have more body fat to protect them against the elements also.

We are proud! Males keep it natural and women change it to make it more manageable and look good, just like every girl does! You have no right making assumptions from the side line!
