I recieved a ticket for parking too far from the curb in front of my house. The car was actually parked 24" over the curb instead of 18". It was in a residential neighborhood and not obstracing traffic in any way. Should I contest this? How likely would it be dismissed if I complain about it?

IT'S ALWAYS WORTH IT. TIP ONE: DON'T EVER TELL THE JUDGE OR D.A. THAT YOU HAVE A COPY OF YOUR TICKET. IT IS THE BURDEN OF THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY TO PROVIDE THE PROOF TO PROSECUTE A TICKET. ALLOT OF TIMES THE DA. DOESN'T HAVE A COPY OF THE TICKET, AND THE COPY PROVIDED TO HIM IS ILLEGIBLE AND THE CASE GETS DISMISSED. I ONCE HAD 6 PARKING TICKETS DISMISSED AT ONCE BECAUSE OF THIS. AT 125 PER POP THEY WERE TRYING TO BANKRUPT ME. IN YOUR CASE I WOULD ASK IF THE OFFICER THAT ISSUED THE SUMMONS WAS CARRYING A RULER OR TAPE MEASURE.CHANCES ARE THAT HE WASN'T. IF HE WASN'T HOW WAS HE ABLE TO TELL THE AMOUNT OF SPACE BETWEEN YOUR CAR AND THE CURB.

No. You shouldn't contest it. You've admitted guilt; you were parked too far away from the curb and you got cited for it. You should pay your fine and debt to society and go on with your life.

If, on the other hand, you measured the distance and can prove to a court that your car was only 17 inches from the curb rather than 18, I'd say fight it.

But, since you say the car was 24 inches away, you're guilty. Sorry....

What!?! You mean to tell the Yahoo! Answers public you got busted for six inches? Six inches? I don't even bother to measure when I parallel park. I have never heard of such a thing. I simply cannot believe that someone went out there and measured how far you were from the curb--especially for six inches. Did you make somebody angry?

Here is the best way to figure this out: Is it really worth your time off from work to fight this ticket? Or is the time off from work and the rest of your life going to cost you more than the cost of the ticket? Just a thought.

I have fought two and won, I presume that you are in the States but in Britain there is a book that you can buy off the net called 'The Driver's Survival Handbook'. Too many people 'give in' and that is what they bank on, then bank the money. If you believe it was a tough call fight it ...what do you lose?

I don't think the parking ticket would put up much of a fight. ha! ha!
(I couldn't help it)

On a serious note, you don't get poor driver points for it, so pay the fine and move on. They got you by 6 inches, so just tuck it in there a little tighter next time.

Pay the ticket,it's cheaper in the long run. If everybody parked where they wanted...how would i drive an Ambulance to your house in an emergancy.

How much is your time worth? Personally I would pay the ticket and practice my parallel parking

This is a time consuming battle that is better not fought. Your time is more valuable than dealing with this. No points are given for this sort of alleged violation.

No. Unless you can prove your car was not parked there.
But if you got the ticket. You have already proved you were.
