I have, and I really hate it. Many times people talk down to me and expect that I do not speak English. This even occurs in My English classes. I usually have the top score in all of my English classes, yet other students, whenever we have group work, talk slowly to me, and assure me not to worry about the work. This upsets me a lot. Firstly, because their (the members of a certain group) analysis papers (This is usually what we do in Literature class) are terrible, and their grammar is as well. (I don’t mean to sound high and mighty, but I work as an English Tutor and know what a good paper is) Whenever I do group work, I usually end up doing all of the work, and the other members get credit. Once, after I gave a presentation, I was told that I was lucky to have such a smart partner because I would share in the grade as well. He didn’t eve do anything except stand there!

No, I don't have an accent. I also tutor pronunciation. If I had an accent, I could not tutor this subject. I think it might be because of my skin tone, features, etc. Also, I'm usually very queit in a professional setting.

'Been there, done that!' Don't let it get to you. Maintain your confidence. Let the comments in one ear and out the other. Make sure you do your work, even if it means you do it alone. You benefit fully in the long run and it will be to the others' detriment. By doing the work, you ensure that your high grades are maintained. Before the end of the shool year there is bound to be an exam where each person has to perform on his/her own..........

Hajgora, get off the racism track. I'm a white, blonde SMART Southern woman. You want to talk about underestimated?

Just let them underestimate you all they want. When someone comments on what a smart partner you have, look at them and say, "Oh, was he supposed to work on it also?"

Just do the best that you can. I'd say that it is not because you do not speak English because if you speak half as well as you write it, you are very good. You might have an accent. If the other students talk slowly to you, tell them that they can speed it up, you work as an English tutor and your time is valuable.

This happens more than you might know. It's part of the racism that so many Americans still deny exists, or which they ignore.

I've even been fired for speaking Spanish to another Spanish-speaker, when what we were saying did not involve the manager or the clientele in any way.

Just be excellent, be courteous, and treat other people with dignity. Don't hold grudges, for they hurt you more than anything. G-d will reward your virtue and hard work, and in life there will be more people than not, who recognise the good in you, and don't discriminate or hate. Don't tolerate discrimination, but at the same time, move on in life, seek out those who value you for your person and all of whom you are.

Yeah, it's the pits. I've been underestimated most of my life, simply because I'm female and it's still a man's world. It's improved, but not fixed.

Don't let others dump the work on you. Define your personal boundaries.

I live in a country where I don't speak the language and know I'm considered an idiot. That's just what people do.

Welcome to the new "dumbing down" society we now inhabit.

Everything points to modifying our goals.

I've often been underestimated.

I spent a lot of my own time, usually late at night, writing 70 chapters dealing with all I know about 9/11.

I believe I may have solved it.

The economy has all to do with the new dumbing down of everything.

Why would Microsoft write a book called "Word processing for dummies"?

I think you are more than compensated when some dork talks down to you and you can come up with a snappy comeback like "oh, great, I'm being talked down to by a linguistically-challenged lamebrain."
