if hes the type of Sweet pansy guy to get mad at you for telling him yo breath stank then maybe you need manlier friends, cause i would tell his *** in a heart beat like dude man go brush your teeth (but in a more vulgar fashion) and besides your only doing him a favor, cause if my **** stank you better tell me cause i don't want to go holla at some ladies with my breath smelling like a sewer. So look at it like that

If you are not close enough friends who can talk to each other freely about anything and everything then you bigger problems that his bad breath dude.
On his birthday, get him a whole lot of chewing gum, mints, tictacs, mouthwash and toothpaste...he might actually get the message that way!!
I think his feelings would get hurt by people rejecting him and making fun him and you never try to save him from that as a friend.

You could just tell him if you are truly his friend. Would you want to know if the roles were reversed? You could offer him a mint. Most people ask Why, are you trying to tell me something? Ask him if he flosses and brushes his tongue. Honesty is the best policy, you can just put it politely and he would probably be grateful coming from a friend rather than a potential date.

ahah thats funny, you would be hurting his feelings but also helping him. If you call yourself a friend, then tell him straight up..bro your breathe smells please have some of my gum. Or you can say in it as a joke. If you don't tell him then who will..plus if he's talking to girls....think about what can happen...

Write him a note, and explain the problem, and suggest that he visit a dentist? If he is really your friend, he will appreciate you Honesty. But, be prepared for the possibility that he is aware of the problem, but can not afford to correct it!

Stupid little song I heard a couple years ago....
"Poof be gone, your breath is really strong!
Wait! Come Back! I think I've got a tic tac!
Not one, Not two, but the whole stinking pack!"

I'd just tell him maybe he doesn't know and would want to. Tell him you are telling him as a friend and don't want to hurt his feelings but feel that he would want to know.

your not much of a friend if you can't broach the subject, he will think better of you for telling him, he may need to go to the doc/dentist or stay off spicy foods.
