I am probably moving to Japan soon with a friend. We plan to open a business together lol. But the point of the question. I live in America with my grandparents (in between places right now) who have always been like parents to me. And I have never lived outside of the same county! Now that I'm an adult and am ready to REALLY dig my feet in and go, I'm noticing just how painul the adjustment is for all 3 of us living more than 20 minutes from each other. So brilliant me, I decided a simple way to make it easier on us- stay in contact. And not just mail and phone calls either. I found the perfect cell phone for myself, it's like a mini computer, the Sony Ericsson W810i, which is EDGE and GSM compatable. Because my grandparents don't play with the fun things on phones, but so they could recieve video, photo and call me when they like, I chose the Z500a, also EDGE and GSM compatable.

But how do I get EDGE or GSM? Are they both global? I need serious help here!

What I meant is, are they BOTH global? And if so, do they work in Japan?

Also, the phones are labled 3G, so I would assume that they are not 2.75G!

What is your point of question?
Yes the GSM/EDGE phone (like the SONY Eric) is compatible in the GSM world. However, probably it doesn't work in Japan.
GSM/EDGE is classified as a 2.75G (generation) network technology. In Japan, 3G is popular today, never heard the name, 2.75G.
If I were you, I will bring laptop PC and talk via Skype.

And if you'd really like to live and start business in Japan, there are many things to get over first.
To know about Japan, about alien registration, opening bank account, language, etc.
You probably won't be able to get cells, including prepaid-phone, without alien registration in the city today.
Japan is not immigrant country, other East Asian nations are as well. You can't expect racial diversity like the US.

Why don't you get an Internet connection and then use Skype or similar??
cheaper for calls to your parents and calls from them to you.
