Actually, it's a protection of marriage, but the Religious Right doesn't understand this, or civil rights, for that matter. I don't think they have ever heard the phrase "equal protection under the law". They have their own warped agenda. Marriage is a right for every citizen. The New Jersey Supreme Court had the right idea by applying the Equal Protection clause in the US Constitution. Hooray for them!!!

Great question. I don't have an answer and am curious what people will say.
You will probably get the type of answers you are looking for if you asked in the Religion/Spiritual section since the only people that have problems with gay marriage are from the Religious Right.

Well, for starters, marriage is not a 'right'. It is a ceremony given by G-d as an illustration of Christ's love for the church. A sacrament.
And why is gay marriage necessary? I remember when this issue first popped up 2 decades ago when the AIDS epidemic began striking the gay community. (And don't get your panties in a knot...my husband and I lost one of our dearest friends due to complications from AIDS - karposi's sarcoma). Spend some money, see a good lawyer and take care of any issues that might occur that way. A good lawyer can set it up . And if it is strictly for the 'spousal benefits' like life and health insurance, do what everyone else does...life insurance allows you to specify a beneficiary., you are allowed to specify a beneficiary. If it's insurance, then do what the rest of us do who do not have insurance. Either figure out a way to get some or pay your own way. We've been doing it for years.
Gay marriage seems to be a way of gays forcing their agenda upon the rest of us, insisting that we accomodate their lifestyle and condone it. Gays are comparing the struggle for gay marriage to civil rights and demanding the right. Well, it's not a civil right...and frankly, it is very insulting to the civil rights movement to define it as such.
Have a commitment ceremony or whatever you want (you can have a scientology marriage...i'm not sure that any country recognizes it as a real marriage, but the ceremony is there so...but as long as gays want legislation that they can marry, then I'm going to continue to back legislation that they can't.
Frankly, I'm getting tired of gays making so many demands on our society, insisting that we adapt to them, make allowances and basically cater to their every desire. I don't care what you do in your private life, but when your demands start influencing and affecting me and my family, then I am going to get right back up in your face and shout at you as loudly as you are shouting at me. And that is not censorship, that is my right just like it is your right.

I despise the homosexual movement.
As an Atheist I welcome my fellow gents with glee.
I only despise their organization that through intimidation by proclamation has infested the great land of the United States.
After they successfully legislate same-sex marriages the ACLU will begin petitioning for bigamy and polygamy to be legislated into this rat infested pot.
Look at evolution dear woman, everything is in proper order with the heterosexual animals attaining dominance while the homosexual animals segregate into the lower ranks of society.
