Not much. It's just that most potential employers want to hear you say you're looking for a career rather than for an occupation. Occupation, I guess, just sounds too much like "job."

To me, an occupation is something you do to make a living. A career is something you are interested in and will pursue even if it is not in your best financial interest (like being a teacher or social worker).

I would define a career as working in a field that you are interested in and would like to move up in as time progresses, and an occupation as a specific job that may or may not fit your longterm goals regarding work.
