Yes timing chain can jump, when gears worn and chain stretched (due to high mileage). Stretched timing chain will also make timing off (accordiung to the marks on front used for timing) I have "tuned up" chevys and Fords, that had to be advanced as much as 10 degreess, - in order to get them to run right! Some made it till the engines "died" some finally jumped timing and had to be taken apart!.. Or if car was "rough enough" they just get parked!

A lot of timing gears (the big gear) have plastic outer circumference - this makes the chains run silent, (but) the plastic chips off and,- then the chain is more easily "jumped",--- If chaniging this kind of timing gear, -make sure you get as much plastic as possible out of oil pan, as it likes to plug up the oil pickup screeen!

the engine can still run (though poorly), but if it jumps two, - It might be able to run about enough to make the alternator charge, - but won't move car! More than two and it won't run, -- but might backfore real good! The further you go the worse it gets, till finally the engine will just spin over without any compression apparent, and nothing else happens (in way of effort to run)!

Yes, if it jumps time once, it can do it again. Sometimes an engine with a timing belt can jump time and then slip back around to where it lost its teeth and catch again....allowing it to run for a little while longer. YES, this happened to me...in Atlanta a few yrs ago on my escort. It got me another 1/2 mile before it finally shredded for good....after slipping and dying. Good luck.
