LED's 20yrs plus but for practical purposes these are still not yet good enough for genaral lighting, very good for effects lighting though. Generally metal halide or flourescent lamps but for domestic purposes anything 'Halogen'. The halogen gas mixture, could be any gas from the halogen familly, helps deposit the metal burning or evaporating from the filament back onto the filament thus increasing it's life and also the pure mixture helps it burn brighter. Don't ask me the chemistry of it I plead ignorance there. Metal halides, Flourecents, Dichroic Down Lights all have a halogen gas mixture in the capsule, hence them being preasurised . Traditional globes just have ordinary air. The better the quality of the halogen mixture the longer the life of the globe. Good gas mixtures are not cheap, so generally speaking the cheaper the globe the shorter it will last, the more expensive the longer. For example Osram now has a dichroic globe that lasts 6000hrs. Also the more reputable the manufacturer the better their quality control. I always use GE, Osram and Phillips.

The twirly kind are called Compact-Flourescent bulbs. They are low energy bulbs, they use the least amount of energy and last up to 800 hrs.
