G'day John S,

Thank you for your question.

The Zimbabwe government and their policies has a lot to do with it.

A look at Yahoo! News full coverage indicates the perceived problems with Zimbabwe.

I think it is mostly because of the World's attitude towards the obvious cases of racism that occured over the past few years- involving the farms and everything. It may take time for people to get over the fact that their land was taken from them and they were left almost penniless with nowhere to go. I personally think that racism is as much of a crime as anything else. It is mostly our perception of crime and security that influences decisions- The crime situation in Kenya is not directed towards a single race- pretty much every body is affected by it, people of all races and all ages. What happened in Zimbabwe was directed at a particular race, and there is no justification for that regardless of what anyone says, I am not taking sides, but maybe there was a more just way of dealing with any problems that the locals had. The negative attitude comes mainly from tourists and the media all over the world. Tourists come to africa mainly for the wildlife and safaris etc.. Therefore the tourists have to be from a place where these things do not exist. ie: Europe, Asia, North America - "Most" Europeans are white, they are the closest continent to africa and obviously most of the tourists come from there. After the whole racism fiasco, it is clear to see why the "World" would have a negative attitude toward Zimbabwe.

I visited Zimbabwe in 1990 and it was spectacular and friendly. Mugabe was president then but hadn't gone off the deep end yet. The news about what he's done to that country is absolutely heartbreaking to me, and I *really* hope the reports have been exaggerated. If anyone has any way to prove this to me I'd be very grateful.

I also lived in Ghana for a year (1974) as a Peace Corps volunteer. Again, I never met nicer people anywhere. Thankfully, Ghana hasn't flipped out and as far as I know is the same fun-living place (I have some confidence in this because there's never much news about Ghana, and no news is usually good news).

A country with nothing going for it.
I'm from SA and we have higher crime yes, but we are economically more sound than Zimbabwe. It is an absolutely beautiful country, but it is just a lame duck right now.

It is really sad to see because Zim used to be so prosperous too. It had a large agricultural sector going and now "Niks boet". The media also blow everything out of proportion.

Possibly because Zimbabwe is a communist police state run by a vindictive and violent megalomaniac. All opposition is ruthlessly supressed. Mugabe's policies have turned the country into an economic basket case where many people are destitute and near to starvation. That's why it is shunned as a pariah by the free world.
I'm sure North Korea is a nice place with a low crime rate too....

There's really nothing to be negative about Zim really. It is in a terrible economic and political state. Frankly, I wouldn't want to go to Zim at the state its in right now. Even my Zim friends don't want to go back there until there is a change in the country.

Thing is the country is so beautiful, yet under the rule of an idiot.

You might be thriving through corruption because it is now the most corrupt country in Africa. The corruption is not carried out by ordinary citizens but by the ZANU PF government. The latter has left every business they lay their hands on either bankrupt or the enterprise ceases to operate altogether - check Ziscosteel.
The negativity stems from the attitude of Robert Mugabe towards his own countrymen. He rewards those who kill and maim the opposition members, he rigs elections, he doesn't support the business of black counterparts who are not from his party - see how he is stifling Econet, a mobile operator. In short, he doesn't love his countrymen to open up businesses, instead he is bringing in Chinese people who are establishing cheap, and poor business shops in the city center. He is still leaving in the past, as he still continues to control prices of nearly everything in the pretence of doing it for the ordinary people yet he goes and demolishes the shacks and houses of the same people, what a hypocrite! Lastly he is a dictator and he owns more farms than the previous white owners and the partition of land only benefited his party loyalists who know little about farming and they are rarely seen on those farms as they spend most of their time in towns.
Yes, Zimbabwe is a beautiful country, but all that beauty has been tarnished by Mugabe and his party and his leadership has seen more deaths of black and white people than that of Ian Smith. Zimbabwe has the world's highest inflation rate of about 1200% and its history in the making as the rate is rising in a country which is not at war with anyone except itself. Kenya is also riddled with corruption but it lags behind Zimbabwe as for South Africa, it is the jewel of Africa as for crime, tell me a country without criminals! Would FIFA have allowed the world cup to be staged there?
Zimbabwe is safe to visitors as long as they don't talk politics. The locals dare open their mouths for fear of the secret police known as CIO, for if they ever catch one, that person will be tortured. I don't know which Zimbabwe you are trying to promote, but don't fool people as what is happening there can be read on the internet. Zimbabwean people generally are nice people who have been forced to flee to foreign countries because of Mugabe's policies. As long as he is in power, that country will continue to sink into the abyss of poverty.

Beautiful country, wonderful people, was the best country in the world when I lived there when it was Rhodesia.
Get rid of the despotic madman tyrant Mugape and maybe the country will once again be worthy of receiving tourists.

On the news you only hear about the crackpot president and people getting thrown off the land and it sounds like chaos. It's like any place that people don't hear much about, you only hear the bad things, and remember them. One of my best friends is from Zim and it sounds fantastic.
