School system and religions all over the world. Children don't compete until they are taught to do so.

concepts like "survival of the fittest" are popular in competitive places like the u.s.

I think it is a cultural thing. some cultures are more competitive, and american culture is the most competitive. just look at the obsession with sports and winning and eveyrhting is a contest. i don't think being competitive is good. sure we "win" much but we also make people suffer for it.

Because most of their first 18 years is a big popularity contest. It takes most about 5 years after that to realize that life isn't like school.

It is a big competition. They just understand who to compete with.

I live in orange county (in southern California), and this place is so crowded that everyone fights for everything: jobs, colleges, girls, housing, etc. It is a big competition, and I can't wait to move out.
