500 watts is 500 watts is 500 watts. A power supply, 5-100 watt light bulbs, or your microwave on defrost, 500 watts is 500 watts. The difference is, most power supplies in computers are used as "transformers"...they convert AC power to various voltages of DC power, primarily 3.3, 5 and 12 volts DC. Transformers always pull the maximum power and the rest is wasted, where some AC devices use more or less power as needed. 500 watts is 500 watts. I use a smaller system with external USB devices, such as my DVD player/recorder. When I don't need it, it is off. I try to stick with a 300-350 watt supply which will amply supply a floppy, cd rom, two hard disks and the motherboard. P.S. Don't forget to turn off the little DC transformers that connect to these external devices also.

Hi,
I shop a lot and to save time and money I use cheapest prices search engine. Almost every merchant is there and over a million consumer written reviews. You will find many other ways that will help you with questions.
You can shop online or you can go to a merchant and use the toll free phone number if you feel more comfortable shopping like that.
There are merchant reviews, product reviews, compare by brand and a lot more. I hope I helped you and I wish you good luck.

Good advice from all above. I go to newegg (cited) for my needs because they have excellent service and they also have users' ratings (but high prices, too).

You can check out bazzillions of dealers at pricewatch (cited). Don't get taken by outfits that quote cheap prices but send out junk they won't support. If you're tempted by an outfit that you've never dealt with before, check them out on resellersrated.com (cited).

Good luck.
