It depends. A star can be very popular but still many people may not know who they are. For example I had no idea who Paris Hilton was before the paparazzi were all over her and she was on every magazine cover in the stores. Even though she was well known before this, people like me didnt know her. Once they get overexposed pretty much everyone in the U.S and many people in other countries know who the person is. This is very helpful if they plan on starting their own clothing line, perfume line, or when a new movie of theirs comes out. This is because of name recognition. People are more likely to see a movie with Paris Hilton and Brad Pitt and buy clothes or perfume made by the stars them than some other guy and girl actors that not many people know. People will recognize the name and go for it. Like for example would you rather buy a Lamborghini or another car that is similar in every way to the Lamborghini (including price). You would more than likely buy the Lamborghini and not even concider the other car.

Some do, but the ones that don't, the ones that are already getting over exposed will eventually end up like Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.
