However, in the online game world, it's to avoid frivilous lawsuits. Even though it's not illeagal to cuss in a game, a game were kids can potentially play legally is a game that needs to have obscenities blocked. This is why games like Runescape have bans on certain words.
However, it's a very fine line of which we walk in the world of console games, as most used to be lan-based and such. However, in my experience, Animal Crossing DS has a filter that'll stop cursewords.
