9/11 changed the lives of those directly affected (died, had a loved one die, lost their homes, livelihoods, etc.) in such a profound way, and of course the policies and tenor of this country, that to describe the personal influence it had on me is certainly minuscule by comparison.

That said, as I watched the aftermath of 9/11 from my television 3000 miles away from the scene, that we could lose our lives without warning at any time really hit home. Within less than 6 months I had left the job I was not happy in and took a temporary job in a field that was more in line with my desires--and it was 500 miles from my home. It was a big risk for me at the time--I was 35 at the time and hitting my stride in my previous career and there was no guarantee that this would work out and there was no going back to the previous job. Happily, after 3 more months, I was able to find a permanent position in my chosen field; I also met my soon-to-be husband in my new hometown; and I am happier than I've ever been. My good fortune is appreciated greatly by me in light of how it was born and in contrast to so many who lost so much and those who lose so much each day--knowing full well that I am at equal risk of losing everything I hold dear. So glad that I hold these things dear now and that I've chosen the path I am on.

Some of the biggest unexpected changes in my life have resulted from books I've read. Of these, the one which had the biggest effect on the way I look at the world would be "The Singularity is Near" by Ray Kurzweil, which I discovered last year. It's about the accelerating rate of technological change, and it's a very positive, optimistic book. I agree with it. Some of his conclusions are so obviously true that you'llwonder why you didn't figure it out yourself.

yes my wife died in 2003 after a brief illness of two days. She used to be sick but was normal in her activities. None expected her to pass away so suddenly.Even the doctors were shocked.

The death of an Uncle. When he died I finally took a chance with some of my poetry and decided to go back to school to work on my writing...it has been unbelievably great. He inspired me to take a chance...and follow my dreams. I will always hold him in my heart.
