First scan for what exactly? To determine the sex or just a scan?

Just for a scan, i had my first one at 5 weeks. Usually they don't see much of anything at that point (and it is a transvaginal ultrasound by the way) Maybe a yolk sac or whatever it is. But that's about it.

I then had a scan every three weeks after that.
If you are looking for the first scan to determine the sex, you can start to see the organs form around the 11th week per my High risk OBGYN. He was sort of sure at my 13th week ultrasound, and positive at my 16th.
So, you can go early if you are wanting to determine the sex, but it is best to wait until your 20 weeks ultrasound to be more on the sure side.
Even at 16 weeks, i am not convinced yet!!! He seems positive, but i will be more at ease at my 19 week ultrasound. ALthough, he was right with my last son when he told me at 14 weeks.
Good luck

You can have a scan anytime. The earliest you will see something is 4-4.5 weeks where the gestational sac will show. At 5 weeks the yolk sac will be seen and at 5.5 a fetal pole and yolk sac can be seen. At six weeks the heartbeat can be detected. It looks like a little flutter and gives a sigh of relief because 95% of pregnancies that show a heartbeat are out of the woods for miscarriage.

During normal pregnancies, most doctors won't perform one until the 20th week. In high risk pregnancies, you may have one every time you go in like I did with mine. If you tell your doctor that you have had difficulties (whether or not you have) or other problems in your family history, you may be able to convince him or her to do one.

Here is a website where you can see what a baby looks like on ultrasound at any given time during the first 12 weeks.

Here is a website that will give information about ultrsound and what is normal and abnormal, etc.

Best of luck.

My daughter had some bleeding early on in her first pregnancy. She got a scan at 6 weeks to check the baby was still ok.

She couldn't see anything really, but the staff were able to detect a heartbeat and reassure her that things were ok.

(Baby is now 2 and wreaking havoc all over the place!)

your first routine scan in the uk is around the 12weeks,but you can get an earlier one on doctors request if there appears to be complications.i had a scan at 8wks with my 4th pregnancy, because doctors thought i was having an ectopic pregnancy, but luckily everything was fine, and i now have a beautiful 10mth old son.the only problem with having a scan so early on in pregnancy is that it doesnt look like a baby,he looked more like a little kidney bean, but it was worth it for te reassurance.hope this helps.

Every hospital is different. I live in Plymouth and they do the dating scan at 20 weeks, but in Exeter, they do it at 12 weeks and then another at 20 weeks. Check with your midwife, she will know for sure.

The first ultrasound is usually done around the 8th week of pregnancy, and it is done internally.(In the vagina) It's not painful at all. You wont be able to hear it yet, but you'll be able to see the baby's heartbeat and the should be able to tell you how far along if that wasnt established at the last visit.

I'm not quite sure what a "scan" is. do you mean Ultrasound or Sonogram?

If so, they usually do it about 12 weeks. Sometimes earlier if you are older or if there may be other problems such as diabetes or another illness.
