Must be "Kes" (originally "A Kestrel for a Knave") by Barry Hines. It was one of my course books for English Lit at school when I was about 14... Great book, very English, very realistic, very depressing.

Kestral For A Knave by Barry Hines.

This is one of my all time favourite books. I have read it hundreds of times over the years.

You can still buy copies in Waterstones.
