Get more memory. The owners manual will tell you how to upgrade it and what type of memory to get. Defrag your harddrive. This will cost you less than 100 dollars.

I would say that you definatly need more RAM. These days, in my opinion, 256MB is not enough and if there is a limiting factor on your computer that would be it. This will definately cost you less than $200. Installation is relatively easy but involves opening up your computer, if you are not comforatable with this then you will have to pay a store or someone else to do it. I suggest that you go to a computer store, ideally one where people know what they are talking about, not a bigbox store and tell them you are looking to upgrade your RAM. They will need to know what kind of RAM your computer uses. You can find this out on the internet by searching for the specs of you computer model or you can take them your computers model number and they will help you find it. Also unnecesarry running programs, such as spyware or useless utilities, can use up your RAM. A clean computer will make much better use out of the RAM it has.

I give thumbs up on the answer "Gabi" gave. In addition and before defraging I would use a good anti-spam-anti-virus etc first.
I use Norton SYSTEM WORKS. It has 8 features cost me $70 at Best Buy. I only used Best buy because Circuit City was out.
I routinely use Circuit City because I find it generally cheaper with very good service and return policy. Also, they have computer/software repair that is a whole lot cheaper than Computer Geeks hourly rate.
Good Luck.

The one suggestion of running defrag is good. To do this:

1. Start
2. All Programs
3. Accessories
4. System Tools
5. Defragmenter

Let it run over night when you're not using your computer. After it's done, reboot your computer too. If that does not make it run faster, I would recommend you go to your local Best Buy and talk to their "Geek Squad". They can give you good advice and even do the upgrades for you.
