Well it's not just a US thing, I think we picked that one up from Europe. Some say it's just proper ettiquette not to wear white after Labor Day, others say because white reflects heat, you're warmer if you don't wear white in the fall/winter months.
Apparently it started out as you shouldn't wear white *shoes* after labor day and was truncated from there.

Back in the old days, white shoes and purses were made of wicker. Obviously, when the cold weather started in, women would switch to leather shoes. This is what started the "rule."
I find it amazing that women will criticize women for wearing white after Labor Day, but won't bat an eye at an unwed, teen mother.

It was an old southern culture thing. Many people still follow it today, but a lot of the fashion guru's say that you can wear white after Labor Day now.

It's against corporate policy.
Actually, you can wear any color you want after Labor Day in the U.S.A.
We even have a winter white that's worn all winter!
