It was "Pong" back in the seventies. I think it was released by Atari. It consisted of a single dot that was the "ball", and two lines on either side of the screen that were the "paddles". You would turn a knob that moved the paddles up or down and hit the ball back and forth just like table tennis. Doesn't seem like much now, but at the time it was considered very high tech!

Pong was the first, but space invaders was what really made them popular, it was invented by Atari
