Some people believe it stands for 'Birmingham Radio - Midlands Broadcasting' (or similar) but they're wrong.

The original company that won the IBA’s Birmingham franchise was Birmingham Broadcasting Limited, and they wanted something that combined a US-style call-sign with the company name. So, BRMB Radio was born.
