replace your thermostat and radiator fliud($80 do it your self/ $250 for a shop) check to see if your radiator fan kicks on at the high temperatures, if it doesnt you can just hook it up to a switch if you live in a cooler climate area and just switch the fan on when you stop.

Let it run while sitting and wait to see if the fan kicks on. Some cars have two fans, one runs when the temp. gets too high, the other runs when the ac is on. Let it run up to normal operating temp and see if the fan kicks on. If not, check the fuse, and the motor. They are pretty easy to replace if needed, and usually not that expensive. When you are driving, cool air is flowing over the radiator and cooling down the water, which cools the engine. When you stop, your fan should move air over it, but it's not and that's why it overheats. If it ever gets real hot, turn the heater on full blast, that will help a little. Driving fast helps also. If the fan motor is good, and the fuse is too, it could be the temp. sending unit that measures the temp in the engine and kicks the fan on when necessary.

Try flushing the radiator and make sure the oil is full and clean. Changing the radiator cap sometimes will help. Otherwise have someone check to make sure there isn't any oil in the coolant or coolant in the oil. If the engine has ever gotten too hot, the head gasket may have to be changed.Be sure that the fan is coming on and off properly also.

Most likely it could be the cooling fan. It is an electric motor on there, and when its not working properly, can cause your vehicle to start overheating like you stated.

my mom has a '92 and the fans come on when a set temperature is reached, when your gauge is at 3/4 the fan should run, pull over, pop the hood and check it out, good luck
