Imagine it this way... Today you have a project to prepare and for this you must go to a bookstore and find the information you need for it. This information usually doesn't come in one package, so in most cases you must join information you get from several "books" to be able to make your project. When you've done with it, another project comes along and you have to go through the entire process all over again. Of course nobody assures you that you'll be working at only one project independently... So there comes the time when you need to rearrange those "books" as they were before you used them, to be more easier and more quicker to search for them again next time.
Same thing is with searching required files for completing a task which you are giving to the operating system.

Disk Defragmenter is a system utility for analyzing local volumes and locating and consolidating fragmented files and folders.
while you store your data in hard drive it will be scattered, when you perform it all the data will be placed in order and together. It will be easy and fast to access.

It will move all files in your system to logical contiguous chains.
IE: when software gets installed to a disk, It doesnt all go nicely in one big block. It gets scattered across the drive filling tiny free space gaps.
Defragmenting will move them all about to most of your files are all neatly next to eahc other. This way it stops your pc needing to search the drive for data , thus better performance.
Im sure a google search for " define:disk defragmentor " will give you mor info.

when ur using the PC in regular use, it just stores files everywhere just like ur room. its a big mess
this makes the computer hard to find the files that it needs, which makes its really slow
defragmenting collects all the files and place it neatly where its easy to acess and find. this lets the computer to store files anywhere it wants again. so that why u need to defragment ur HDD often

it brings files close together, if u erase something on HDD it will leave an open space, you save something on the HDD like a text file, it will fill up that space and put the parts of the text file that did not fit in that open space somewhere else on the HDD so things become scattered, defragger will rearange your HDD
