This goes back to the days before the Civil War. In Spain, football clubs have also been the bastions of political groups and the like. As for the great rivalry between Barca and Real, some fans really do hate each other but most do not! Both clubs are massive and their aspirations to not only be La Liga champions but also Champions League champions!!!

No,hate doesn't come into it at all. They just represent the rivalry between the 2 cities and there is a grudging respect. There is no shame attached to being beaten by either. Crowd fury is usually reserved for players who were considered emblematic and then switched sides. The most recent example was FIGO who went from Barca to Madrid.

combination of the following:
They're the 2 biggest cities in Spain;
They're the 2 most successful clubs in Spain;
Catalonia, Barcelona's region, considers itself to be almost its own country. They therefore don't like Madrid, which is the centre & capital of Spain as a country.
there's more of course, but they're the main reasons - hope this helps.

Goes back to the France days when Franco was a Real supporter and he tried to suppress the Catalonia's because he feared that with their independent streak that they would over throw him. He tried to ban the speaking of their language which they did any way at the stadium

well because they are the 2 dominating teams is spain so the fight to get to the top is rough so then the fans have to do thier " you suck " thing it has no relation to the geography of the country.
