I dont know that it lessens the pains. It can help with progression. I used a rocking chair with my second and third sons. This helped tremendously. Rocking through the contractions. However the drawback being you are sitting and therefore gravity cant do much to help you out as far as progression of labor goes. With my last son I went from 3 to 10 in less than 20 minutes. I moved from the chair and bed to the shower. (that alone felt great! and I had an awesome nurse who rubbed my back the whole time.) Every person responds differently and has different needs during labor. Go into it with an open mind and if one technique isnt working try something else.
Good Luck

No, some people say it will bring on labour. Walking is good for you though, but for many people it causes lots of problems with pains in their lower back and can also cause oedema (the swelling people get in their legs to start, then their whole body). If you want to lessen labour pain, do pelvic floor exercises. Those are the muscles which help during labour, but dont get exercised without doing exercises specifally for them. Search the net on how to do them (you just squeeze your muscles inside down there, like you are trying to stop yourself peeing). It does work, I had a 8lb9oz baby with a bid head without even tearing. You will also be told to do these after birth.

It does not help to lessen the pain...it helps to advance the labor and get things going. That is why they tell you when you are close to your due date to take walks. It helps the baby to move down into the birth canal and for your cervix to dialate.
Good luck and Congrats!

Hello--I have never heard that walking helps LESSEN labor pain..but it is said to help bring on labor. I don't know if this is your first baby but trust me..if your contractions get painful enough and you don't have pain relief..you won't want to walk through them anyway!

Yes, any movement like walking helps. Also, water or warm water (not too hot) really helps with contraction discomfort during the early stages. I have never tried a full water birth.

It didnt for me, it actually made them come faster and harder. they usually have you walk to move along your labor. so if they have you up walking its just to get your labor moving. I don't think it helps much with the pain though.

well..I walked throughout my whole pregnancy with my first and I had a really fast and easy labor with her...I am 34 weeks with my second and I haven't exercised much at all...so, I guess we'll see if there really is a difference!

being mobile certainly helps.
depends also on the possition of the baby.
all fours relieves pressure on the spine, good howling possition too!
trust yourself to do what is right, you can do it.
unbeleivable pain, unbeleivable gain.
