Hey Muffin,

"Young Sam left school at the age of 11 to become a printer's apprentice. He worked in Hannibal for a newspaper published by his brother, Orion, and then found jobs in St. Louis" 1

but this site does not say doing what.

"In 1848, at the age of thirteen, he acquired a job at the Missouri Courier. Here he learned the basics of newspaper publishing and printing. He began writing and drawing sketches. A few short years later, he started setting type and contributing sketches for his older brother Orion’s Hannibal Journal. In 1853, he took over the paper in his brother’s absence, and also got some sketches published in the Philadelphia Saturday Evening Post. In late 1853, he moved to the east coast and took some jobs in Philadelphia and New York as a printer. This would not last long, however. Within one year, he moved back to his Midwest origins and retained some printing jobs there. Furthermore, in 1859, Clemens received his steamboat pilot’s license." 2
