no need to trim the body of the tree.

trimming is usually associated with the base- cut enough of the lower branches to give 18-24 inches of clearance from the base of the tree to the lowest branch. Use the branches or boughs to decorate outdoors (inside is not recommended due to sap and the tendency to drop a lot of needles without adequate water).

make sure to cut a slice off of at the base of the trunk before putting in the stand. It only needs to be 1/2 to 1" thick. If you do not take this step- your tree might not be able to take on the necessary water to keep its needles.

Water immediately and often...

Usually the trees have been shaped when you get them. Trimming generally means to decorate. Go buy lights, tinsel and glass decorations that you like and start hanging them on the tree.

I have a saw and I start hacking away at the branches that offend me.
That's how I trim it. Some people use a chainsaw, but that usually ends up with someone in the hospital.

I haven't seen an xmas tree in 3 years, and if I never see another one, it'd suit me just fine.
